Who we are

April 21, 1884 Arlington TX legally became a town, twelve years later in March 1896 this Church was founded. The first service was held in a one-room log cabin that was started two years earlier by Brother John Wesley Wilson on land donated by Brother Lon and Sister Gladys Ditto. The building was completed with the help of Brother Steven Thomas Dorsey and Brother Anderson Parker. The small membership was pastored by Rev. Talley and Rev. Aaron Ditto until the convening Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.At the time of the conference the Church membership was about twenty five. During the conference the Church was given the name Armstrong Chapel, named after the Rt. Rev. Josiah H. Armstrong the twenty-fourth elected Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Rev. Ahnin H. Forbes was assigned as Pastor.During 1938-1939 the original Church was torn down. Services were held in the home of Brother and Sister Wesley Wilson. The cornerstone was put in the care of Brother Ditto.In 1950 Rev. Annie Newsome Douglas became Pastor. The Church was rebuilt and given the name Douglas Chapel. In 1965, during Rev. L.H. Cole’s leadership a new Worship Chapel was added onto the existing building. Rev. Cole launched the first search for the church history. He discovered the original name of the church, and changed it back to Armstrong. He also discovered that Armstrong is the oldest Black Church in Arlington, TX.In 1978 Rev. Robbie L. Slaughter became Armstrong’s Pastor. Under her leadership Church mortgage was paid off.Rev. Curtis Pittman became pastor in 1980. He continued the historical research of the church. He retrieved the original cornerstone. In 1983 He brought together some family members of the church founders and had the re-laying of the original cornerstone.During the over 114 years that Armstrong AME Church has been in existence, there have been other Ministers assigned as Pastors that contributed to the Word and Work of God going forth.

Ministries

WOMEN’S MISSIONARY SOCIETY (WMS)

A ministry of women called to discipleship to grow in the knowledge and experience of God through Jesus Christ. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the WMS is committed to support the mission of the church, and challenged to help one another engage in ministry and action. We strive to grow and respond in faith to God’s redemptive plan for the Church, society, and the world.

Lay Organization

The Lay Organization of Armstrong Chapel AME Church is organized to teach and train the lay members (Non-Ordained members) of our congregation about the local church as well as the connectional church. We encourage all members to actively participate in this Christ-centered organization as we help prepare leaders and workers for the Kingdom of God. Our focus is to have a positive impact on the lives of our members and ministries of our church.

CHURCH SCHOOL MINISTRY

A ministry of Christian education that strives to develop a teaching and learning environment to empower its participants to grow in Christ. There are spirit-filled classes taught and open to everyone to come learn the word and build a closer relationship with God, while loving one another.

Meet our Pastor

ABOUT

Marlon B. Jones is the son of Marlon B. Jones Sr. and Mary Allen. Rev. Jones is married to Scherrie Jones and is the father of two amazing children Paiton and Marlon III. He was educated in the Kansas City, Kansas public schools. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Sociology (with honors) from Paul Quinn College located in Dallas, Texas. Following graduation Rev. Jones has worked as an educator in the Dallas public schools, Branch Manager for the Boys & Girls Club and a Student Assistance Specialist for the renowned Caron Treatment Center. Rev. Jones is currently pursing a Masters of Divinity Degree from Redeemer Seminary in Dallas. In the fall of 2004 he was ordained an Itinerant Deacon in the North Texas Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Rev. Jones is a fun, energetic, anointed man of God with a passion to preach God’s word. He possesses the unique ability to present the gospel in a relevant way that both challenges and changes the life of the hearer. His vision is to restore unity to the body of Christ, to draw and enlighten the un-churched, and to empower and equip the saints for the glory and honor of God.He received his first pastoral charge from the Rt. Rev. Gregory G.M. Ingram on July 9, 2011 at the 10th Episcopal District Summer Convocation. It is with great joy that he now takes up the mantle of the great servants who have come before him to serve the wonderful people of the Armstrong AME Church.
